Nos, an ad-free social app, was founded and created by Evan Henshaw-Plath aka “Rabble”. They are best known for being the first employee and lead developer of Odeo the podcasting startup they lead engineering through the pivot to create and launch Twitter. As an activist and technologist, Rabble is passionate about building commons-based social media apps that prioritize equity and sustainability.
The Nos social app has been designed to empower people to connect and communicate as the dominance of public, corporate-controlled social platforms becomes unpalatable to many.
Existing social media apps are now the domain of machine-made content, designed to feed an algorithm. At Nos, we believe in a new wave: decentralized, user-driven and controlled—that is taking its place. Care, connection and sustainability will become paramount.
While traditional social media platforms treat their users as the product—focusing on ad revenues, profits, and engagement metrics—Nos is built on Nostr, a decentralized, user-led protocol. Users own their account, their feed, and their connections, resulting in more fulfilling, positive and impactful interactions online.
Nostr is an acronym for “notes and other stuff transmitted by relays”. Unlike platform social media apps which are owned and controlled by a single corporation, Nostr is a public commons where users can choose between a wide variety of compatible apps and servers. Nostr apps distribute your content to many servers so no single administrator can control what you consume or create.
